I really love the 5th Avenue branch of the NYPL; with Bryant Park behind it, it's quite a lively spot, even in the 100 degree heat.
There is a beautiful cafe space, plus lots of tables and chairs (very Jardin des Tuileries in Paris). The library makes use of the space by setting up a Reading Room outside. The homeless were reading right next to the corporate types eating lunch. V. NYC.
